Rebel X Experience

Behold! The story of the 3 month long “Rebel X” journey told in 20 minutes set to music with some added bonuses ;). I will separate the slideshow into song segments in the next day or 2, but for now… I hope you are able to enjoy it in it’s entirety.

Also, be on the lookout for a complete write up of the Rebel X experience in the next few days as well. For now…

The Scale Does Not Control You

Every now and again I bring this video up that was taken during an impassioned moment one day where I noticed everyone was getting down about the scale regardless of the million and one positive things they were doing with their lives in that moment that the scale wasn’t giving them ANY credit for. I’ve already shared this video on Timetorebel.com, but never highlighted it. So… Here it is, highlighted.

Remember, the scale is strictly a barometer for your journey. A measuring tool that does NOT define you. It can be frustrating and it damn sure is necessary, but NEVER should a scale be the deciding factor in how you feel about yourself. NEVER should the scale discredit the better eating you’ve done, increased exercise levels you’ve been working so hard for, or the self worth that seems to come and go like a psychotic roller coaster on days where the scale isn’t “telling you what you want to hear.” If you let an inanimate tool like a scale judge all your living, breathing, animated movements… Well then I will go on record that you are silly. Simple and plain, you are the silliest of gooses who needs a smack of reality that YOU are the King or Queen of your own castle… The scale is simply the jester. You call it in when you need it, take what you need from it, and move on with the recognition that you are defined by your love for yourself.

What you see on the outside is a reflection of how you feel about yourself inside. Until you learn to love yourself, you’ll always see ugly in the mirror.

Amen.

Most inches lost: Kathi Tyler (19.9! Art Villareal came in second with 13.1 inches lost)

So, Hulk: Round IX is over. You all CERTAINLY finished this challenge in true Hulk fashion, and the party on Saturday, March 31st told that story very well. I couldn’t be more proud of every single one of you who showed up and reveled in the work you all did in 2 and a half months that it takes some people a life time to achieve (and I’m talking FAR from physical…)

DIG!

If you still haven’t signed your team shovel, I will have them at the gym this week with markers available 😉

For those of you who weren’t there, I can guarantee you that you were sorely missed. One team, one dream. No man left behind. You plant a positive seed, you get a positive flower. To the Hulksters not in attendance, we definitely watered your flower for you (TWSS). Being a part of the Hulk family means you were a part of our hearts during each and every award. Every picture during the slideshow. Every sound off. Every tear.

20120402-112638.jpg
Kathi Tyler, the overall winner by losing over 11 percent of her overall body composition! She also lost 19 inches and has one of the meanest bicep flexes I have ever seen. This is her receiving her MVH (Most Valuable Hulkster) award with her beautiful future Hulkster daughter, Bree,

I can say it was an honor to spend so much time with the best people I have ever met. It was my pleasure to share in laughter and tears with all of you, and I already can’t wait for what Hulk X is going to bring just so we can relive the magic that happened at Sally Tomatoes on March 31st, 2012.

Cliff Crocker
Cliff receiving his award for most inches lost. 24 inches in 2 and a half months. He even went on vacation to Hawaii! He was the overall body composition loser for Hephaestus as well, dropping 23.5 lbs. This man is a beast!

When I got there, I didn’t know what to expect… I knew there was a lot of Toga talk, but it’s always interesting to see who put their money where their mouth was. It’s like when 20 people tell you they’re going to show up to boot camp and in reality only 8 people show up, I thought I might see the same thing with Togas… I was WRONG!

Devin Booth
Devin Booth was the overall composition loser for Poseidon, losing over 8% of his overall body weight. That was just a fraction of the inspiration and motivation he brought to the table for Hulk. Out of all the Hulksters in attendance, out of all the awesome people there that day, out of all the awards given out… When I announced Devin as the MVH for Team Poseidon, he was the only one to get a standing ovation. I told him them and I’ll tell him now Devin, that had nothing to do with me up there with you and EVERYTHING to do with you. I swear the clapping got louder when I walked away 🙂

Everyone showed up decked out to the fullest! Even a couple Hulksters who are doing the next challenge but didn’t do this one showed up in a couple of the best togas there! Thanks Fatimah and Mario 😉

Cheryl and Lori!
Love these two!!! Cheryl and Lori are a couple of my absolute favorite people, period. Lori was the MVH for Hephaestus and for VERY good reason. I have never seen someone embody “Hulk” BEFORE coming into a challenge quite the way she has. She’s fierce, beautiful, caring, hilarious, giving, loving… Lori, you are godsend for us small timers who need a little motivation every now and then ;). You are Hulk. I feel the same about you Cheryl ;). You two are in great company!

20120402-112737.jpg
Board made by Bobbi and Tye Rivera. Results made by everyone on Hulk!

As everyone strolled in the smiles were amazing and the Togas were even better. The bar was working its magic and people were mingling… Life was good! With music going on, food being prepared, champagne and beer flowing from the cups chalices of many a merry Hulkster, it was time to serve the food….

Tam Bam
Tami Larsen trying to hide from the crowd. She lost 13.1 inches! SHE GOT THE MOST CHEERFUL AWARD!!!! Unicorns really DO exist!

I’d tell you how the food was, but I have no idea. I was too busy mentally preparing the intro speech I was going to make, mingling with everyone, and overall just admiring the joyous faces that were everywhere you looked. It truly was euphoric. To put it in perspective, I was approached by 5 people at the end of the party who were there to support loved ones and said “I want in on the next Hulk, what do I do?” You talk to me. You’re in 😉

Lori is awesome!
Lori De Marco is amazing! She brought her wonderful daughter, fantastic man, and adorable mini shovels with an “H” on each one of them! Lori, thank you so so much for these shovels. They will be making a reappearance very soon…

We are Hulk
If you haven’t signed the “We Are Hulk” banner, let me know. I want your signature on that bad boy!

Before I got to the slideshow, I spoke on a potential opportunity that I will be sure to fill everyone in on past Wednesday (I don’t want to jinx it!) when I go through an interview of sorts ;). The underlying message though was that Hulk made the interview possible. I’m getting interviewed for this amazing opportunity because of all the blood, sweat, and tears shed at everyone’s behalf.

UPDATE! Well, the interview was successful… check out Fitnessrebellion.com where you can read up on myself and the rest of the awesome “Rat Pack” who were blessed enough to appointed to help lead this Rebellion! One team, one dream :).

Mario and Fatimah
Mario and Fatimah, future Hulksters! Watch out Hulk X…

I then went on to let everyone know that Hulk is just like “Terminator: Salvation.” I got some blank stares so I decided to explain… “Terminator: Salvation” is about a futuristic setting where machines have taken over the globe. They have standards and ridiculous protocols that have NOTHING to do with the essence of humanity yet they are so powerful they squash anyone that opposes them…

Cara and Josh
Greek Unicorns! I love you, Cara Elizabeth Jones.

Yet in this barren wasteland of destitute dictatorship, there is a small force… A rumble of humanity that says “We are going to fight for OURSELVES or die trying.” Simple and plain, they were the resistance. They would comb the land searching for ANY stragglers who were lost like they were with the message “Alone we are weak, but together we can accomplish anything. Even fighting for our lives.” With everything going against them and everything in the world providing the little to no hope, they banded together and CREATED hope…

Yes we are...
Thank you Jazzy! Jazzy made an AMAZING “Book of Failure” with everyone’s worst fears in written form from “Holiday Hulk.” She also made the “Trinity Scrolls” with the compliments everyone wrote themselves during the “Which would you choose?” exercise. They complimented each other quite nicely.

Hulk, we are the resistance. Together, we choose to take on this scary world that tries to tell us what to eat, drink, how to celebrate, what to enjoy, who to hang out with, what we can and cannot do, we aren’t good enough, why try… We say NO! Alone we are small… Together, we are HULK.

Justin, Tye, and Carlo
Justin, Tye, and Carlo sporting their best threads and even better smiles 🙂

Afterwards, I played the 20 minute slideshow. I broke down the slideshow in terms of the first couple weeks are the first 2 songs, the next few weeks where we did the Blacklight workouts and 80’s night workouts is the next song, then the final few weeks of pictures were told through each Team Song. The slideshows will be at the bottom of this post, segmented into each category I just listed. Take a look! I guarantee it’ll pump you up!

Kalyn Garrison
She got the “Best Warrior Face” award. She’s a lot better at it than I am…

If you don’t know what the team songs are, they are worth a download (or at LEAST a listen to from the slideshow!).

Hephaestus: “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes feat. Ryan Tedder Poseidon: “Shake It Out” by Florence and the Machine Apollo: “The Believer” by Common feat. John Legend

Cara Jones
… We are. My little goddess receiving her “Best Unicorn” award

After the slideshow, I gave a brief intermission for people to use the bathroom, refill their drinks, stretch their legs… Then it was on to the awards!

Jess and Bree
Jessica LaVenter and Kathi’s daughter, Bree 🙂

As you can read at the top, those were the results… and amazing results they are!!!

New Phone
Everyone chipped in and got me a giftcard for a new phone since mine is so busted! I was rendered absolutely speechless… I had no idea and got that phone ASAP! I can tell you all that your investment will not be in vain! I updated half this post with my new phone! Thank you SO MUCH Bobbi Rivera for coordinating such a thoughtful, sweet gesture that I will be reminded of every time I use my phone, which is every minute, every day. Thank you so much to everyone else pitching in and being so amazing!!!

I can honestly say that my FAVORITE part of every Hulk party is giving everyone their personal recognition awards. It allows everyone their time in the sun while allowing ME a time to recount funny stories, fond memories, bashful mix ups, funny faces, and everything in between! I can ALSO honestly say that I had no intention of doing the presentations shirtless. I learned the hard and fast way that the quality of the pins you use to hold your toga together is VERY important.

We Are Hulk
We are Hulk…

In the end, I just want to reiterate my thanks to everyone for all the hard work put in to making these last few months possible. It takes a village, and I’d say we have the BEST village. In addition to the slideshows below, I will be making a final slideshow of the party as well since we had pretty much the best photography out there happening while we partied! Between everyone’s cameras going a mile a minute and Mikel Eli photographing up a storm (Click HERE to go to his Facebook page to see all the photos from the Trinity Wrap party as well as other fantastic work he’s done! Please, don’t forget to “like” his page. He’s worth it, trust me.)

I also would like to thank Bobbi, Kima, Cara, and Tammey for all their hard work they put in to making the party a possibility! Without them, the awesome venue and amenities would have been nonexistent.

I would also like to thank Karin Bowhall and Kristie Clay for their FANTASTIC picture taking skills! They were the reason behind about 90% of the slideshow pictures (some was Mikel Eli too!) because they would come on a workout night that WASN’T their team to take professional pictures. Thanks is not enough but it’s all I’ve got at the moment so just know I mean it with all of my Hulk Heart.

I would also like to thank John and Denise Stave. They are the owners of the Anytime Fitness off Santa Rosa ave. If 9 out of 10 times a gym owner would turn my zany ideas away and not even give me a chance, they were that 1… Without the freedom they allow and the unrivaled support they give to Hulk, Hulk would not be what it is today. Next time you see them, please, take a few moments and give them a HUGE thank you!

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone’s favorite Unicorn, Cara Jones. When I was worked to exhaustion and so spent I would literally get racked to tears, she was there to rub my back and make me dinner. When I would need input on something I wanted to do for or with Hulk, she was there every second of the way. When I needed help organizing all the before and after certificates, awards, and EVERYTHING else that went into the wrap party, she was there… filing papers, organizing files, and taking care of the business I couldn’t with a smile on her face (when she wasn’t helping Bobbi bake all the goodies everyone had the pleasure of enjoying at the party!). When I finally was able to enact my tradition of watching the slideshow when it’s FINALLY completed at 1am the Friday night prior to the party, she was under my arm just as excited as I was. When I needed ANYTHING, even just a nails on my back or kind words, she was there for me every step of the way. I want you to know I will forever appreciate everything you do for me and for everybody Cara, and I hope that I can someday return the favor the way you have for me. Even through the most trying part of your life, you are STILL a giver. You are a rare breed. You are the only one of your kind actually. You really are the last Unicorn…

Now, before I shut up, I encourage EVERYONE who participated in Hulk to leave a comment (only takes a couple minutes) of what you want someone to know if they ask “So, what makes Hulk so great to you?” I want the scope of this party to fire everyone up… I want YOUR words, not mine, to seal the deal. I’m only one man, YOU are many.

Tom Walton – If It Were Easy, It Wouldn’t Be Special

Tom Like a Bomb!

Tom Walton came out of the blue in regards to joining Hulk/Rebel, and I’ve got to say he’s made one of the biggest immediate impacts on not only himself but everyone who has had the good fortune to work out and rock out with this fella! In all the stories I put out, I’m looking for one common denominator… Inspiration via relation. You can relate to the success story because it speaks to either how you’ve felt before, how you currently feel, what you’d LIKE to do, or all of the above! When you can read about someone “just like you” who is able to pick themselves up by their boot straps and achieve EXACTLY what you fantasize about yet never go for… Well, I’ve found the Chaos theory in full effect here…

“In chaos theory the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state. The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane’s formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks before.”

It’s up to you… Is Tom’s story the flap of the butterfly’s wings that sets you off like a hurricane? Read on…

If It Were Easy, It Wouldn’t Be Special

When self-loathing, lack of confidence, and overall dissatisfaction with yourself is too much to handle, most people have a subconscious reaction to take their focus off themselves with various different behaviors. Some people become so compulsive with a hobby that it starts to become a detriment to the individual to an outsider… yet to the hobbyist the unhealthy obsession trumps the painful truth that they aren’t happy with themselves, thus the lesser of two evils are chosen. Some people turn to a mind altering substance that wipes the crippling self-disgust away and allows the abuser to feel normal, not like themselves which sadly is equivocal to pain and hurt. Sound like anybody you know?

Then, there’s Tom Walton. Tom Walton learned two big lessons as a kid… 1) To treat others better than you wish to be treated and 2) It’s hard to feel worthy of being treated awesomely when you’re the novelty husky kid so he’d better REALLY stick to the number 1. If he gave everyone all his attention, focus, and love unconditionally and steadfastly well then it would be impossible to save enough caring for himself, making it ok that he didn’t feel confident and comfortable with the person he was.

Interviewing Tom, he was quick to point out that on the outside everything was fine in his world. He came from a good family living in the Northern California suburbs. Although always a very husky kid, Tom was always into sports. He even was a Team Captain on one of his High School’s most successful football teams to date and a gifted wrestler who loved the thrill of one on one competition. It was a good upbringing with good friends that accepted Tom for who he was. The only problem was that Tom didn’t accept himself. Busy loving everyone but himself and unsuccessfully trying to use his outer successes to mask the fact that he was depressed beyond anyone’s comprehension, he did what most people do…

He rode it out. Without saying a word or doing anything about it.

Sound like anybody you know?

Out of High School, Tom started dating his future fiancé, found his current full-time job, and lost his drive to play sports since he figured it was “time to grow up.” On his steady climb to 300 pounds, 6 foot tall Tom had an unsuccessfully successful stint with a popular no-carb diet. For those of you who need that to be cleared up… The no-carb diet is notorious for having rapid weight loss transpire for those willing to put down the breads and pasta but can’t stand the thought of putting down the bacon, cheese, and steak. His intermission to his eventual 300 pound mark found a detour… He had gotten down to 213.2 pounds (he made sure to point out the “.2”) and… Stopped. Fed up with the unrealistic restrictions, toll it was taking on his mind and body, and at the inability to physically continue the no carb madness, he quickly gained all the weight back with interest. The worst part… since the weight loss was so rapid, the method so extreme, and since Tom didn’t do any resistance training to acclimate his body to the rapid weight reduction he felt his body looked WORSE at the low weight he haf achieved. He didn’t take the time to implement a healthy lifestyle… rather took the quickest way possible no matter how unrealistic, unsafe, or overall damaging it ends up being in the long run. Sound like anybody you know?

3 months ago Tom decided to join a gym. He had been yearning to find his former athlete for some time now, but found a hard time finding the spark beyond it being an “I’ll start tomorrow…” after thought. One way I like to look at it is a mighty oak tree at one point started out as a little tiny seed. Sometimes you just need to give that seed a little water to start the growth process… Tom’s seed had been planted; he just didn’t know what nutrients it needed…

One day, while cruising around on Facebook (have you heard of it?) he came across a blog I had posted of a couple inspirational stories that came out of the last transformation challenge I had just completed. Reading the stories, he found the common denominator WASN’T that these successes came of having great genes, the sickening ability to be able to push past but seemingly enjoy the “torture of exercise,” or a trust fund set up allowing for an elite team of professionals to “fix them.” No, the turning point in every single story he read was when the person decided they were worth it and no one was going to give them happiness if they weren’t willing to take it first.

He messaged me right then and there. He wanted to know when the next challenge was, when we met, and what he should do to prepare for it. “… Oh, and hey man!”

When Tom joined the gym, he never looked back. He was sick and tired of being sick and tired of being sick and tired. He was fed up with being sad about himself and realizing at his subconscious it was up to him to change that. Rather than taking his mind off of himself with food and loving everyone else to the extremes that he didn’t have the energy left to love himself, he was instead FORCED to learn to love himself. He HAD to deal with his insecurities in such a way that if he were to run away he would be adding fuel to the fire that got him so depressed in the first place. Once he had his mind-set that he wasn’t going to quit no matter how badly he wanted to (and trust me, boy did he ever want to quit!) then he only had one option left… To seize the moment. To be the person he didn’t think he could be by doing the things he wasn’t comfortable doing. “If it were easy it wouldn’t be special” I tell Tom time and time again, and not only does he get it… He lives it.

Tom found his stride, but only he could find it. Rather than waiting on someone to save him, he had the profound realization only he could save himself.

The day Tom messaged me about joining my transformation challenge was a tough day. It was a tough decision yet one he knew deep down he had to make. For himself. For once. Tom told me he wanted to be one of the success stories he read about. He told me he was hoping someone could read what he went through and relate to the point of having the same turn around he did. He wanted to stress that it needs to be a commitment to yourself or what’s the point? The thing he REALLY wanted to hammer home was that eating better, exercising, and stepping outside of his comfort zone didn’t kill him. Quite the contrary, it introduced more life than he had ever felt himself worth to be. His comfort zone kept him from being around people that love him as much as he loves the world. Yelling like a madman when we do the pre-workout chant. Taking his shirt off at the beach to enjoy the sunshine a little more. Wearing goofy outfits and taking part in workouts that he never would have dreamed of attempting a few months prior. Tom even cut his hair into a mullet for 80’s night… AND STILL HAS IT 3 WEEKS LATER! His comfort zone doesn’t hold him back anymore.

Well Tom… here’s your story. You’ve lost 45 pounds in 3 months. You’ve signed up for a 12 mile mud run in September. You’ve learned how to eat for life, not for weight loss. You inspire every day. You’ve learned to do what some deem impossible… To love yourself as much as you love others.

“I’m going to be one of those stories because I’m worth it.”

Well Tom is only at the beginning of his story… but mission accomplished. How do I know that?

Because I can guarantee you’re ready to write your own success story…

Go.

I wear this shirt often and with pride

PS Be on the lookout for everyone’s favorite Tye Rivera’s story to be featured on FitnessRebellion.com! It is one of the next success stories to be published ;). AhhhhOOOOO!!!!

Sam Enos – Learning to Fight

If you’re looking for Sam, she’s smack dab in the middle!

I wanted tot ake the time to share with everyone the write up I did on Sam Enos. It will be up on Fitnessrebellion.com soon (which I highly recommend you go check out to read stories with the same inspirational edge as Sam’s from Rebels all over the country!). In the mean time, I wanted those of you who know Sam to know her a little bit better. Her hope as well as mine is that you are able to elate and be inspired by Sam’s story. Not because she’s lost 200 pounds or climbed Mt. Everest, but because she found happiness within HERSELF. EVERYONE has the ability to find happiness within themselves. The hard part is to stop making excuses for why you think you’re not worth it. To stop placing blame on anyone or anything else in regards to YOUR happiness. At the end of the day, you are your last line of defense. Your body doesn’t do anything you’re mind doesn’t tell it to do first. Own your mind… That’s what Sam did, and she is most certainly never looking back…

Leanring to Fight

On the outside, Sam is a good looking 21 year old with a sweet demeanor and some of the kindest eyes you’ve ever come across. Hidden behind those eyes lie experiences that most can relate to but very few would expect if you were to judge a book by its cover.

In Sam’s words, she’s always felt awkward. Growing up, she was a little on the stocky side and a lot on the “2 left feet” side. To make matters worse, the friends she chose to surround herself with were all naturally teeny tiny and made it very clear that she didn’t quite fit in that way. It was this callous nature that caused Sam to quit soccer at a very young age. With the ridicule and awkward feeling only getting worse as she got older, Sam gave up on sports all together by submitting to the fact that she felt she could never be one of “those people.”“Those people” referring to those that fitness came naturally too. Who looked good sweating and smile that self-fulfilled smile every time their feet hit the pavement during their daily 5am 10k. Who had no problem eating healthy and who visibly and audibly express their disbelief in the fact that it’s “hard to behealthy” for some people.

Even after backing off of sports, including ignoring a strong urge to run her freshmen year of high school, she still found that no matter how hard she tried, she was still treated like the ugly duckling. Whether it was how much she sweat in P.E., what she wore, what her voice sounded like, or the fact that she wasn’t quite as pocket sized as her friends were, Sam was made very well aware on a daily basis. It’s not that she didn’t TRY, it just so happened the she got labeled the clumsy black sheep and could never shake it.

This led to anger… anger at the world for denying her happiness. You see, deep down Sam knew she was a good person. Deep down she knew she had a lot to offer the world in regards to awesome human companionship and baseline considerate behaviors that tend to be lacking these days, yet no one saw it. This made it really easy to withdraw and stoke the flames of anger like she were powering an old time locomotive.

7 months ago, Sam joined AnytimeFitness. She’s participated in my Rebel programs during that time and to says he’s accomplished a lot both inside AND out would be the understatement of the year. These are the reasons that I approached her to be the 5th story I had the honor of turning in. She obliged, and I proceeded to interview her!

Normally, I’d put into my own words the remainder of what we talked about, but this situation turned out a little bit differently…

The day after our interview, at 7:12pm, I got an e-mail from Sam that summed up better any words I could possibly come up with for her… She sent me the kind of e-mail that makes my year. The e-mail Sam sent me was one that cannot be faked yet everyone can relate to, soI’ll leave it to her to tell you her turn around…

“Hey Josh,

I kind of had a “light bulb” moment today. I started to really think why did I decide to join the Fitness Rebellion and start to make exercise a priority. It’s pretty simple; it was because I wanted to be happy. I think the past few years I have been trying to find happiness/approval in other people, when I am the only person who can really make me happy (well, that and God…but that’s adifferent story haha). Also, in order for me to accept other people and be open to change, I had to accept me for me. I had to be open for change in myself, and find happiness in my own life. Change is a big deal for me, So getting a strong willed, Miss Negative to change was a challenge in itself….I think by putting myself out there and doing something for me for a change has helped me put a big dent in that fear of the unknown. So motivating myself, and having that motivation I was seeing around me helped me to accept change and realize that Ican do anything that I put my heart and mind into. The past 7 months have broken me (in a good way) both physically and mentally, but because of that “fight” I have become a more confident, strong, and independent individual who has found that happiness within myself.

I thought I would share that with you because I am not good when it comes to be put on the spot, or opening up because I hold a lot in….but I feel like others might be able to relate.

–         Sam”

Sam, I think it’s safe to say you are not alone in that fight… Sometimes you just have to be willing to learn to fight. The irony though, is that in that learning process you unknowingly become the best teacher anyone could possibly ask for… Thank you for learning to fight Sam. Thank you MORE for teaching others that it’s NOT “you either have it or you don’t”… No, it’s “you either fight or you submit.” The choice is ALWAYS up to you.

Sam, pictured on the right, after doing the Color Run!

Be on the lookout for Tom Walton’s story tomorrow 😉

The Rebe11ion – Details!

MUST Watch video before committing to sign up!

MUST Watch video before committing to sign up!

With the final week of Rebel X upon us regarding fit tests and measurements, it’s that time… to put out details for the next step… The Rebe11ion. It’s not so hard to see the 2 “L’s” are the number “11.” Simple and plain, this is the 11th challenge in illustrious history that makes up “Team Hulk/ Rebel.” There has been a LOT of growth in these last 10 challenges, and that growth will be on full display with this 11th go around.

All across the nations, small seeds of inspiration are being planted in a big way, and little ol’ Santa Rosa happens to be rising like a bamboo shoot. As your appointed Rebel representative in this Fitness Rebellion, I will tell you the world is only going to open its eyes wider and wider to the inspiration that oozes out of these 12 week transformations. I mean it when I say that when this challenge is treated with the respect and enthusiasm that it rightfully deserves, you can achieve in 3 months what some people spend a LIFETIME trying to achieve a fraction of.

If you’re seeking it, this challenge will help you achieve what you thought you couldn’t in a way that people will never believe could possibly be this much fun. I believe in planting a positive seed and getting a positive flower. This challenge will not break you down in a traditional way, because I believe that most people hopping into this event have already been broken down enough. It’s quite the contrary… I refuse to accept your negative thoughts rather than instill negativity in you. I’d love to go on and on but… That’s what orientation is for ;).

Below are dates to mark down on your calendar:

August 18th (Saturday)Day 1! Measurement day! Times to be announced shortly
August 19th (Sunday) @ 12:30pmOrientation!

Don’t worry though, I won’t leave you all hanging… I have something special in mind to keep you all healthy and busy while I’m gone!
September 18th-20thBoot camps resume! Until…
September 21st – 23rdTough Mudder! It’s that time of year again… Time to head to Tahoe and conquer that beautiful mud course! I will be doing BOTH days (Saturday and Sunday) and will be arriving in Tahoe Friday so as to acclimate and prepare. I’ve been training hard for this since the last Tough Mudder we did in February and will undoubtedly be thinking of you all as go for doing both days in a row for the first time! Don’t worry, this is my last instance of taking time off…
September 25thNovember 3th – Boot camps resume!
September 28th/29thHalf way point measurements! No make up day offered for half way point measurements, although there WILL be a make up boot camp on Saturday (time yet to be determined, but will be in the early afternoon) at no charge for those who still wanna get some good work in!
November 6th-8thFinal measurement day! There will be NO MAKE UP DAY offered in exchange for final make up day. Not because I’m a scrooge, but because the moment the last measurement is filed, the work for everyone’s before and after certificates starts immediately. I’m talking within the hour of the last measurement taken. So make this day EXTRA PRIORITY!

I miss the mustache Randy!

Measurement day -This day signifies the official start of “The Rebe11ion” and is the first half of the stat keeping portion. All 3 teams will be meeting this day (times to be announced soon). This day is EXTREMELY important, and above all else should NOT be treated lightly. This is a very integral part of the process that, since there are so many of you, I don’t have the ability to set aside additional times to do make ups NOT on this day. With that said, after August 18th, I will announce ONE make up day. That day will only be announced AFTER August 18th and there will only be ONE make up day. That day will be of my choosing and is non-negotiable.

Measurement day is when your before picture, starting measurements, body fat percentage, and initial weigh-in are recorded. There will be important paper work for you to fill out as well as instructions for a special exercise I will have you all doing at home before boot camps start. Not to be forgotten is that this is your first interaction with your team! This is your first chance to get out of your comfort zone and see who you’re going to spend an agonizingly amazing 3 months with!

I love fit test day!

Fit tests – This day follows the same guidelines as measurement day; extremely important and nearly impossible to schedule a make up point due to the volume of participants (which is a good thing!). This is the second half of the stat keeping portion, and it leads to one of my favorite portions of the challenge; The ENDING fit tests. The fit test is comprised of the following:

  1. How many push-ups can you do in 60 seconds
  2. How many crunches you can do in 60 seconds
  3. How long you can hold “Thor’s Hammer” (If you don’t know… you’ll find out!)
  4. How long you can hold a plank
  5. How long you can hold a wall-sit

The reason I love the END fit test so much is because the differences are more amazing than words are able to properly express. You see numbers and times doubled, tripled, quadrupled… Not even an exaggeration. In 3 months. Welcome to the Rebellion…

A little something like this…

Orientation – Located at Anytime Fitness off Santa Rosa Ave. Immediately following orientation (approximately 1:45pm) will be a boot camp all Rebels are invited to attend! Feel free to bring friends and family to both orientation AND boot camp. The more the merrier! Those closest to you are going to be asking what the big deal is a few weeks from this point anyway, so might as well have them find out first hand :). Information on what to expect, what to bring, car pooling, and everything else you need to know will be posted in full detail in a couple weeks, just MARK THIS DATE DOWN!!!! I’m hoping for a great turn out!

As a reminder, here is the exact thought process I expect everyone joining “The Rebe11ion” to have. I will accept nothing less:

What is a Rebel?

The Rebellion is a process starting from within, not from without. The goal is self improvement, starting with your strongest muscles; Your heart and soul. The Rebellion is here to overcome fears that manifest physically and translate into the thought “this is too hard for me.” Once those fears are battled (not conquered… life will forever be one big “rebel workout”), it’s because you’ve got the confidence to battle them. You get the results people don’t get by doing the work people don’t do. Getting the confidence to rebel rage through your fears and insecurities with a balled up fist and a primal scream is the hardest work there is. As Rebels, we do it. We battle. It may not always look pretty, and it will not always be comfortable, but it will be a journey that leaves you standing taller. Prouder. Full of the realization that you are the king of your own castle.  As Rebels, we refuse to take “I can’t” or “I’ll always be this person…” because settling for anything less than supreme respect from yourself is unacceptable. As Rebels, we live by what I’ve dubbed “The Rebellion Rule.” Treat others BETTER than you wish to be treated. As Rebels, we open our arms to vulnerabilities and insecurities because we know the struggle. As Rebels, we will NEVER turn away those asking for help, even when they don’t ask for it. As Rebels, we stand atop a mountain of downtrodden emotions and lack of self worth with our hands stretched towards the sunlight screaming “Join us! The view from the top is beautiful!” As Rebels, we are worth it. We are The Rebellion.

I say we strive for better, not perfect, for a reason. Perfect is a default for striving to be better. Perfection is also an illusion. If you are constantly trying to be perfect, you’ll never be able to truly enjoy life’s imperfections that make life so wonderful in the first place.

Remember… You are only as beautiful on the outside as you feel on the inside. Until you learn to love yourself, you will always see ugly in the mirror.

If you are able to dig on all of the above then the next step is choosing a time frame that works best for you:

  • Team 1 – Meets every Tuesday @6:30pm and every Friday @6:30pm. Measurement day is August 18th (time to be determined) and Fit Test day is August 21st.
  • Team 2 – Meets every Wednesday @6:30pm and every Saturday @10am. Measurement day is August 18th (time to be determined) and Fit Test day is August 22nd.
  • Team 3 – Meets every Thursday @6:30pm and every Saturday at 12pm. Measurement day is August 18th (time to be determined) and Fit Test day is August 23rd.
Each team meets at Anytime Fitness off Santa Rosa Avenue for every boot camp
If you have open availability for a couple different teams or ALL of the teams, PLEASE be prepared to express that. Details below in the “sign up process” step.

It is VERY important that you understand the importance of the team you select. This is going to be YOUR team. We follow the “one team, one dream” philosophy, but I can’t have people switch classes on a whim the way people have before. A lot of work goes into building the team experience, and if you hop from team to team, it throws off a few things… It disrupts the workout I’ve designed for a certain amount of people, it inhibits your ability to fully experience that team camaraderie, and loses sight of the fact that this challenge should be approached as something more important than an after thought. Not showing up to your designated team workout because “I’ll just go to tomorrow’s boot camp” will not be something that will continue with this upcoming challenge. That doesn’t mean you can NEVER switch days, but if you need to switch then e-mail me… We’ll talk it over and see what solution we can come up with :).

If you are able to find a team schedule that coincides with YOUR schedule and would like to get on the list, the next step is:

E-mail Jessica LaVenter! Jessica has been a part of the Hulk/Rebel family since it’s inception, and has kindly volunteered her time to organize everyone’s information! Again, if you’ve watched the video and are ready to commit, then e-mail Jessica at Jessica.LaVenter@gmail.com the following information:

  1. Your full name
  2. Contact phone number
  3. E-mail address
  4. Shirt size (men’s sizes, cotton)
  5. Which team works best for you (Team 1, 2, 3, or any). If you have open availability for for a couple different teams or ALL of the teams, PLEASE mark that. It makes organizing a tad less harrowing and stops one team from getting top heavy to the point where I have to tell people they have to join the next challenge (which I HATE doing… :(). I humbly ask from the bottom of my Hulk heart that if you are flexible with your team schedule, let Jessica know. Thanks y’all!
Once you are signed up, I will add you to the official “Rebe11ion” Facebook group! This group is where pictures, accomplishments, questions, updates, news, funny things, and anything else that help, inspire, or drive us as Rebels. It’s our forum to banter and keep in touch with one another. If you are not on Facebook, don’t worry… All ABSOLUTELY MUST NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION will be posted on Timetorebel.com (so I suggest subscribing which can be done in the upper left hand corner).

If you’ve made it this far than I’m sure you’re wondering about the price:

  • $325 for Anytime Fitness Members (minimum $100 down payment by August 18th, paid in full by November 1st)
  • $400 for non- Anytime Fitness Members who are NEW (minimum $100 down payment by August 18th, paid in full by November 1st)

If you are an official Anytime Fitness member, you can forgo this next paragraph because your info regarding price is done :). If you did not participate in “Rebel X,” are not a member of Anytime Fitness, and would like to sign up for the upcoming challenge, then the extra cost goes into setting up your key so that you can use the gym like a regular member! The only stipulation from a FULL membership is that you can only use Anytime Fitness off Santa Rosa Ave. Our gym is at your disposal for the duration of the challenge, day or night! You have access to all additional classes as well. Once the challenge is over however, you have a decision to make… Which happens to be the next information tidbit :). As long as $100 down payment is in by August 18th and the challenge is paid in full by November 1st, feel free to devise whatever payment plan works best for you!

If you participated in “Rebel X” as a first time “non member” then you are in the handful of people who need to make a decision… To join or NOT to join Anytime Fitness off Santa Rosa Ave. If you participated in the last challenge and would like to get a full membership, then it’s as simple as starting to pay monthly dues. That’s it. The extra fees you paid to participate in the last challenge will be put towards your enrollment fees, adding you to the Anytime network, and activating your electronic key fob so that you pay no additional money on officially joining. Also, once you join, you only have to pay the member price for the next challenge at $325 :). You even get to go to ANY of the Anytime Fitness’s in the area (Rohnert Park, Petaluma, Larkfield, Windsor, Skyhawk area just to name a few…) Better yet, start up rates are currently at $49.95 but you’ll get a Rebel discount at $44.95 a month. To fully sign up, all you have to do is show up to the gym any time between now and August 18th during staffed hours (Monday – Thursday: 10am – 7pm, Friday 10am – 4pm, and Saturday 10am – 2pm) and say “I did the last Rebel challenge, I’m doing the next one, and I want to get a full membership!” and they’ll know what to do! As long as $100 down payment is in by August 18th and the challenge is paid in full by November 1st, feel free to devise whatever payment plan works best for you!

If you did the last challenge, are interested in doing the next challenge, but NOT interested in getting a membership, then your price will actually be $500 ($150 down payment by August 18th and paid in full by November 1st). The reason for the extra cost is because when you signed up for the last challenge and paid the extra few above a normal members rates, you were getting an EXTREMELY discounted monthly rate at $25 a month while the existing Anytime Fitness members were still paying full monthly dues. It wouldn’t be fair to have you sign up again, have full access to the gym just like everyone else, and still paying a discounted rate while everyone else pays full rates still. The extra $100 goes into evening out the monthly dues so members aren’t paying MORE to do a challenge at a gym they’ve been paying full dues to already. I appreciate your understanding! As long as $150 down payment is in by August 18th and the challenge is paid in full by November 1st, feel free to devise whatever payment plan works best for you!

Lastly, just like last challenge, EVERYONE gets a key and gets access to the gym like a regular member! With that being said, there were a LOT of people who would still go through the guest door on the left, not bring their key, go through the door 2 at a time, or brush off the staff at the gym if they approached you about bringing your key. “I’m doing Rebel, don’t worry about it…” would be the treatment the staff gets, and I am going to kindly say that that isn’t going to happen anymore either :). Everyone signing up for the upcoming challenge gets a key to let you in through the member door on the right, and we’re going to use them a WHOLE lot better than we did this last challenge. The reason it’s important to use your little grey key fob every time is because:

  1. It keeps track of the foot traffic in and out of the gym, allowing John and Denise (owners) to make adjustments and monitor as they need.
  2. It’s what ALL members have to do, so it gives a bad impression when they see people showing up to the gym and walking in through the door on the left like they own the place. They don’t say to themselves “I’m only going for a half hour of cardio so I don’t need to bring my key” so that means “I’m only doing Rebel and leaving so I don’t need to bring my key” is out of the question.
  3. It helps everyone in the office. When everyone goes through the door at once or walks in through the non-member door on the left, it sets off all the security systems on the computer and creates momentary havoc on the check in system. Not only that, but seeing people going in and out of the non member door is confusing since they are used to people walking in through that door needing help. There is nothing more frustrating than getting up several times to help someone only to find out it’s the same people over and over again who didn’t bring their key.

I could go on, but you get it :). Everyone getting key access the way we did it last time was new to everyone. Now, it’s not new… Now, it’s something that we all need to work on and do good at together. One team, one dream! You know how I like leading by example :).

There we have it! There is MUCH more information to unveil, like some of the new plans I have for this challenge (one idea I GUARANTEE NONE OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED BEFORE!!!!! I’m excited, can you tell?), the team names, the team song, workout schedule, orientation details, and a plethora of other things. For now, I wanted to get the sign up process rolling. Between this post and the one before it, you all now have all the details of classes in between challenges and how to get going for the challenge coming up. More and more information will pop up as it is ready to be unveiled.

One team, one dream…

– Rebel8

What to do between challenges??

Once July is over, all classes marked “free” will turn into $10 a MONTH for unlimited “FREE!” classes!

As “Rebel X” comes to a close and “The Rebe11ion” lies in the midst (August 18th… Sign up details to come out soon…) There is about a months worth of time in between where I guarantee there will be a lot of motivation looking to get utilized. Well, this post will provide you with acceptable outlets!

Before I continue, I want to let you all know I will be gone the week of July 29th – August 5th to get a little battery recharging in before the dawn of a new wheel emerges :). After that, classes above are as follows:

– Every Wednesday @9am (except August 1st) – Boot camp beat down! A total body blast with a bit of cardio emphasis. Due to popular demand, must be kept to Anytime Fitness members (if you have a working key, you’re good!) only.

– Every Friday morning @9:30am (except August 3rd) – Mud Circuit Training! 12-20 total body exercises set up to test your balance, endurance, coordination, strength, and sheer mental grit as once the workout starts… It doesn’t stop. Designed to train you for the rigors of mud runs (Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, etc.) while giving you a kick butt workout in the process! Due to popular demand, must be kept to Anytime Fitness members (if you have a working key, you’re good!) only.

Every Wednesday @7:45pm – The Rebel-yum! A food group graciously co-hosted by the wonderful Liz Rait! With Bobbi Rivera as the resident recipe provider, this group invites anyone struggling with the food side of this whole health and fitness thing to come on by and talk it out! Get some tips and share your own experiences, all while finding that you truly aren’t alone in this! Click HERE for more info!

And those are just the regular classes I’ll be running! Ask anybody who has done them… Heather’s TRX classes, Michelle’s early morning classes, Angelica’s later classes, and the Yoga are AWESOME! If you’ve waiting for the opportunity to try some of these classes but have been wrapped up in Rebel… Well now is your chance to rock them out! All of their classes will be regularly scheduled the week that I’m gone, so don’t be shy to contact Heather (our wonderful personal training manager!) about any class details you may need. Don’t worry everyone, she doesn’t bite!

Now for the specialty classes I will be running!

– August 8th/15th @ 6:30pm – BOSU class! Back by popular demand for 2 weeks only! This class focuses on total body balance and coordination. Centered around “quiet chaos” this class is different than most of my boot camps… The energy is focused rather than spastic, and the workout is essentially non stop… Testing every fiber your body has got in a way so challenging the time flies by and at the end, you can’t help but want more! SIGN UP ONLY! Due to popular demand, must be kept to Anytime Fitness members (if you have a working key, you’re good!) only. Also, I cannot accept “over the internet” sign-ups. Spots are limited to 12, and you must put your name on the sign up sheet located outside the aerobic room PHYSICALLY at the gym. Cost is $10!

August 9th @ 6pm – Rebel Style Workout: Legs! That’s all the description you need 😉 SIGN UP ONLY! Due to popular demand, must be kept to Anytime Fitness members (if you have a working key, you’re good!) only. Also, I cannot accept “over the internet” sign-ups. Spots are limited, and you must put your name on the sign up sheet located outside the aerobic room PHYSICALLY at the gym. Cost is $10!

–  August 16th @ 6pm – Rebel Style Workout: Core! That’s all the description you need 😉SIGN UP ONLY!

Also, I will be opening myself up to some more one on one sessions if you’d like to set up some tutorials where I can bring you through a workout and give you a handout of what we did when we were done so that you have the necessary tools to know what to do when your NOT doing a class! Please e-mail me  at AllLevelsTraining@gmail.com. if you’d like to set something up! I humbly ask it be kept to e-mail only and not any other form of communication so that I can best consolidate the various methods of interaction the world now provides :). It makes it easier to schedule via e-mail and e-mail only rather than sifting through your facebook messages, texts, voicemails, tweets, wall posts, and website comments :). Y’all rock!

Lastly… We here at Anytime Fitness at Santa Rosa Ave. have a new, positively AMAZING tool to help lead us all on this Fitness Rebellion… a certified nutritionist! Her name is Michelle LaBlue and she is one of our newest trainers yet started out one of our original members!

Nutrition!

That’s our girl Michelle in the middle!

She is certified through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) and has her Nutritionist certification through Sac State. She is capable on every level to help you figure out the best game plan for healthy eating for YOU, not EVERYONE. What’s good for the goose is NOT always good for the gander… She’ll treat you all like the unqiue geese you truly are! The sugar on top is that contrary to the picture above, she has quite the story of knowing the ups and downs of food and fitness so you know that you are meeting with a safe, reliable expert who is going to be able to relate what you’re going through rather than talk to you like “it’s as simple as eat this and DON’T eat this…” A lot of you know my own personal struggle with food and how it pertains to fitness, so I want to remind y’all she MORE than gets my approval!

Michelle LaBlue’s contact information:
E-mail – Fitlabconsults@yahoo.com

If you’re still not convinced, here is a brief bio in Michelle’s own words:

“As a teen and into my twenties, I struggled to find balance between having a social life, exercising, and eating nutritious foods. As a result, I also struggled with my weight. I’d go through periods of trying to out-exercise my bad diet (without results, of course) followed by short-lived starvation diets, which worked temporarily, but were not sustainable and definitely did not support the strong, healthy I was trying to achieve. After becoming certified as a personal trainer, I realized how important it is to fuel your body, not only for exercise, but also to support a healthy lifestyle. I began studying nutrition at Sac State and graduated in May 2012 with my Bachelor’s in Food & Nutrition.
I am certainly not perfect when it comes to eating “clean and healthy” 100% of the time. I LOVE chocolate and pizza, and enjoy both-on occasion. I don’t believe in deprivation-it is NOT a long-term solution. What I do believe in is finding a healthy balance in nutrition and exercise that fits easily into your lifestyle & helps you reach your health and fitness goals in the long run!
Whether you’ve reached a plateau, are looking to lose weight or gain muscle, nutrition matters and I’m here to help!”

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend! Full details on “The Rebe11ion” tomorrow, July 16th ;).

AhhhOOOOOO!!!!!

Rebel X Wrap Party: Hillbilly Ho-Down!

Hillbilly Ho-down!

Don your best denim duds and join all three teams at Keiser Park in Windsor for a down home good time. Bring your significant other, kids, family or maybe some friends who are interested in checking out what Rebel is all about! The more the merrier as we celebrate an amazing 3 months together in true Rebel fashion!
.
We will have some great BBQ, salads, desserts and drinks for everyone along with some other surprises!
.
The party starts at 1 and will go until the parks guy comes and shuts the gate on us at sunset so come ready to party.
.
This is about mingling and celebrating an amazing 10 weeks together. You’ve done a lot, now it’s time to bask in the glory of it! I will be handing out before and after certificates and  individual awards (Including MVH – Most Valuable Hulk) as well as presenting a slideshow depicting the last 3 months and a few other extra videos. This is also where you get to put your stamp on the shovel and sign it. There will also be a showcase of the past 9 challenges that got us to this point in the first place :).
.
$20 per person will get you everything listed above. It would also be awesome if whoever is able could pitch in a few extra bucks for the beer/wine or bring something to share! (If you have kids under 8 you don’t need to pay for them)
.
I have faith that all of you will dig deep for your inner hillbilly and really go all out with your costume.  Right?
.
You can give either myself or Bobbi Rivera the $20 per person any time between now and July 14th. It’s very important that Bobbi gets everyone’s money by then so she can make sure this is the most amazing wrap party yet!
.

The best celebrations are the ones that are worth it!

.

I just want to take this moment to thank Bobbi Rivera for everything she is doing for this party. The theme, organization, and food stuff is all her. She booked the park, has been collecting money to get this shindig off the ground for the last month or so, and has never faltered in how hard she’s working to make sure this is the best wrap party we’ve ever had :). Bobbi, I can never thank you enough for all that you do 🙂
.

I can’t wait to celebrate with you all 😉
