Welcome to the Rebel-yum!

Hey Rebels!

Welcome to the Rebel-yum. A group of people who get together weekly and discuss how our weeks nutrition intake was. We go over ups, downs, victories, disappointments, frustrations, questions, realizations… Everything that makes eating right and taking care of yourself so damn hard… because let’s be honest, we all LOVE having great energy, feeling good about ourselves, feeling comfortable in clothing of our choice, and feeling amazing when you’re being active… So again, we go over all the reasons why we know all of the latter yet it’s like pulling teeth from a shark sometimes.

Puttin’ down the cheese wheel and going for the greenery… 

In food group, you’ll find new perspectives you might not have thought of before. You’ll find you’re not the only one having a tough time. You’ll be a part of a support group set and ready to keep track of you on the “My Fitness Pal” app that is all the rage (that app is awesome! It let’s people keep up with you and share information all while having an insane database of food to make keeping track of what you eat SUPER easy!). You’ll also have the ability to share what YOU know that could possibly help someone else! We’ve all accumulated a lot of experience on this journey we call life… Let’s put it all together and make figuring it out easier!

Every week, we will have a topic of discussion as well as a healthy food recipe provided for you to test out at home! 

Lastly, you don’t HAVE to speak. You are more than welcome to come join the Rebel-yum as a spectator until you feel comfortable enough to share!

Your Personal Letter

For those of you that missed the “letter writing assignment” that was on the direction sheet for measurement day (I understand some people just genuinely missed it), I wanted to put out to the Rebe11ion world what I ask of you…

I have asked all of you on the Rebe11ion to write a letter to yourselves explicitly detailing your hopes, expectations, fears, and anxieties you have going in to this challenge that is due by the time of your first boot camp (this Friday/Saturday) I want you to write it from the perspective that you are addressing your FUTURE self. Write from the point of view that you are talking to a companion who you wish nothing but the best for, but need to express your fears and worries to for fear of bottling it up and not being able to fully submerge yourself into this experience.

This is meant to show you the difference in how you feel in the beginning of the challenge to being able to read it like a time capsule at the END of “The Rebe11ion” when you will be a completely different person. Consider it a before and after photo of your heart and soul.

As an example, I have enclosed my letter to MYSELF so that you not only see every bit of me, but get what I’m going for. I WILL NOT read this, these are strictly for you. I will hold on to these and give them back to you on the final measurement day. This was EXTREMELY impacting to a lot of people last challenge so I highly advise you take this very seriously. Thank you Rebels!

Dear Josh,

Here we are again, and here we are finding out that it never gets any easier, less thrilling, or less rewarding. It’s hard to imagine where everything is at now without constantly thinking of where things started, and you need to not let that intimidate you as much as it does. It’s a point of pride, not anxiety that “Team Josh” grew into “Team Hulk” and has blossomed with a rebel yell into a beautiful “Rebellion.”  I guess the thing you need to stop focusing on is the higher you go, the longer the distance the fall is. The more people that rely on you, the more people to let down. The higher the excitement and expectations, the easier it is to be disappointed and underwhelmed. You should focus a LOT more often on the fact that others aren’t viewing it that way. You should always remember that the “Rebellion” is bigger than you now, and that’s a GOOD thing. That means that everyone understands they are responsible for their own experience and that the burden is OFF of you a bit, not on you! The excitement has spilled over into a ripple effect that reaches to those that have never even MET any of us! That’s where the beauty lies… A positive seed has been planted that grew a positive flower so tall that it’s seen from miles around, we just so happen be standing at the base of it feeding it water and directing the sunlight at it.

I can tell you right now that the person writing this feels a whole hell of a lot better after expressing those anxieties out loud, so I hope the person reading this now feels validated. No, scratch that… I KNOW you will. You wouldn’t be able to type all of what you just typed out if you didn’t realize the bottom line to be true. That’s one of the things I really love about you, is your unwavering commitment to your passion, even if the unknown is super scary. In the end, that’s the essence of the journey… Not what you get at the end of it, but being completely ready to give your all even if failure could prove to be catastrophic. 

I know right now you’re scared of the unknown, but hasn’t that been what’s made you, you? The whole world now knows EVERYTHING about you. For 12 years you held on to that act of bullying that fortified your future yet did NOT define your past. Everyone knows my battle with bulimia and depression is something I have openly shared, chronicled, and put out there as a hopefully springboard for change for SOMEBODY out there, and it’s working! So, what is there to be scared of big fella? 

At any rate, you’ve got this… I hope you kept your head up the entire time and stand by the rebel fist and primal scream you brandish on your heart like a badge of honor. No matter what happens, just remember that I love you. Never forget you are the ruler of your own destiny. Always keep at the forefront of your mind that no one is going to give you anything. Most importantly… I hope you were able to utilize the once in a lifetime opportunities that have presented themselves over the next three months to change the lives of as many people as possible. Above all else, I hope you are able to achieve just that.

August 19th: The Dawn of a New Wheel

If you are one of the people who took the time to read this site after seeing it on the giant banner off Santa Rosa Ave. then I hope you are able to take just a PINCH more time to check out some of these videos. These videos and photos tell the stories of some MIND BLOWING things happening in your own backyard.

Our goal as the Fitness Rebellion is to let others know that you are the master of your own happiness and YOU get to choose the domain you get to live in. Gone is the “rat wheel” of standard fitness where you need to be a genetic freak, a millionaire, or gym-sadist to achieve “health and happiness.” Today marks the emergence of a NEW wheel. I wheel guided by the heart and soul rather than just strictly quads and tight abdomens. Everyone has their own version of happiness, and that doesn’t always mean “ripped six pack!” yet, how many of us settle for less than we’re worth? How many of us think that the average day to day “miseries” we experience are just a part of life? Waking up with no energy, getting tired and cranky in the middle of the day, feeling bloated all the time, lack of self confidence, avoidance of mirrors… I could go on and on and ON about all the things a lot of people I’ve met along my journey have felt were unavoidable, so they didn’t avoid it! That’s called a comfort zone, and it is doing you ZERO favors.

So below, you will find links and videos to what we are all about. From slideshows telling stories of challenges past, links to successes written about by yours truly, or even my own personal story and why I’m so damn passionate about spreading this message in the first place.. Measurement Day: August 18th (Saturday)

Team I: Arrive no later than 10am

Team II: Arrive no later than 11am

Team III: Arrive no later than 12pm

What to expect: 

Today is the day where the statistical portion takes place. You will have your before picture taken, your initial weigh-in, your body fat percentage tested, and your circumference measurements taken (I will be measuring neck, chest. high point of the waist, belly button, hips, thigh, and arm). There will also be some paper work to fill out and team members to meet! IMPORTANT: Please take note of our outfit for this day. You want to wear the same outfit on the first and last day to have the best comparison possible. I also recommend being as baring as possible… Men, shirtless if you can! Women, sports bra if  you can! I will NOT be taking the photos, that will be everyone’s favorite Cara Jones department. You are definitely in safe place with her. I know that it can be overwhelming to have your insecurities and vulnerabilities photographed the first day… but that’s what we’re here for! You have to know where you’ve started to know where you are and to know where you’re going. Take the plunge, I promise it will be worth it. Nobody ever regrets taking the before photo outside of their comfort zone… No, I hear the regrets when people let their comfort zone win. That’s when I hear “man, I should have really taken my shirt off for that first photo…” 

I look forward to meeting those of you I have not met and seeing those of you who it’s been awhile for! I truly hope you’re ready for a life changing experience… I know I am!

I made it home…

So as I sit here waiting for the representatives from Anytime Fitness to get here and start 2 straight days of filming, I can’t help but reflect on the journey I’ve been on and the many reasons why they’re coming to little ol’ Santa Rosa in the first place. It’s like I said at the Rebel X wrap party, my successes were achieved WELL BEFORE any recognition. THAT is when the true success story takes place.. When no one is watching but you. When the ball is in your court and YOU get to decide whether you’re going to pass it or drive that son-of-a-bitch to the paint and dunk on some fools. EVERYONE is living their own success story every single day, and the way I see it, I’ve been chosen to be a representative for the every-man. For the people who don’t get the credit they deserve. To the real life warriors and rebels refusing to settle for anything less. The moms, dads, students, doctors, wine makers, grocery store attendants, teachers, nurses, police officers, firemen, entrepreneurs,  mechanics, personal trainers, business owners, preachers, the unemployed… We all have our struggles. What those struggles are differ from person to person, but when you pinpoint a spot on a map and tell everyone “this is the goal!” well, it doesn’t matter everyone’s starting point… What matters is that we all realize we’re going to the same place… I took the liberty of naming that spot “love and happiness.”

A big part of my own personal journey is the song “Take Me Home” by Phil Collins. I used to listen to this song on my cd player when I started at the gym some 12 years ago. I had to go to radio shack and pay $10 that  mowed a couple lawns for so I could get an extender cable and put my CD player on the floor while I worked that Reebok cycler like it disrespected my family.

Every single milestone I’ve ever come across, this song was a part of it. This last orientation, I holed myself up in the office and listened to this song on repeat for 10 minutes before I went out and addressed everyone. Body building competitions, my first 8k, tough mudder… This song was there for the beginning, middle, and end.

What I want to share is what this song means to me…

I see “Take Me Home” as being open to interpretation. The way I see it, “home” refers to a sense of self. A calming place where you know everything is going to be alright. This doesn’t have to be a location… For me it’s a state of mind. To me, it’s that state of mind that can make or break you. Strong mind, strong body right?

This first verse, I want you to read it (above). To me, he’s basically saying “don’t worry about me… I’m a regular guy, but I will always figure out what I need to figure out. With that said, I’ve got a fire in me unlike the worlds ever seen. You may think me average, but I’ve got something special coming my way. I’m not quite sure what it is, but until then… I’ve got this covered”

This verse has always struck a nerve with me because this is how I’ve always felt. I’ve told quite a few people this, but I haven’t put it down in writing yet… One of the MAJOR reasons I haven’t told anybody about the bullying story I’ve been through is because I wanted to accomplish something on MY OWN. I didn’t want to be viewed through rose, magenta, fusia, or anything colored glasses. That was the PROBLEM. I HATED how I was viewed, and I hated even more so how I viewed myself. I didn’t want to accomplish anything based on the fact that people felt bad for me… I wanted my secret fuel to be just that… Mine. I wanted to earn what I wanted. I wanted to show myself that it doesn’t matter what tribulations are thrown my way. It’s either sink or swim, and I REFUSED to sink.

“Don’t worry about me, I’ll figure this out…”

The second verse is really special to me. The second verse is what I’ve felt in my heart and soul for a long, long time. To me, he’s saying “I’m destined for great things, I just don’t know what. I have this feeling that I’m on the right path, even if it doesn’t seem like it right away. Besides, why worry about things that you have no control over? Once you realize that, the ability to worry gets severely downgraded. If it seems like I’m not being all that social, don’t worry… It’s all part of my plan. I know what I’m doing. If you’re not into what I’m doing well then that’s ok. I won’t let your feelings about ME bring me down any long. If you’re going to let what I’M doing effect how you feel about yourself, then that’s ok… I don’t mind. Good luck with that.”

Those first two verses ALWAYS bring me “home.” The day I was strung up on some bleachers to be reminded I was lesser than was the day I became me. It was the day I refused to take anybody else’s grief ever again, most importantly my own. I was through feeling the weight of others negativity and allowing it to cause MY negativity to spread like cancer. Everybody knows what it feels like to beat yourself up to the point of believing you’re not awesome. That loving yourself is an impossibility. You know how much EFFORT goes into that? You know how much ENERGY is drained convincing yourself you’re not good enough? What if I told you that all it takes is a little alternating of your mind-rudder and you can take the SAME AMOUNT OF ENERGY and use it to feel good about yourself? If you’re going to wear yourself out, might as well be sprinting  towards the sunlight and avoiding the dark, dark shade.

The 3rd verse is all about the dedication it takes to self. He’s saying “I’m just like you… I wake up and work the day and go home to go to sleep at night, only to wake up to do it all over again tomorrow. I don’t believe in luck or happenstance, so don’t think you’ll find me making any desperate wishes for something that I have the power to achieve. While you’re busy doing your thing, I’ll be biding my time and keeping a close eye on all opportunities coming my way.”

Whenever I feel things are getting out of hand, I listen to this song. The lyrics provided by Mr. Collins are ones that I find can ALWAYS instill a sense of tranquility and confidence when I feel it slipping. It reminds me of the person I will forever aspire to be… Someone with a strong work ethic that recognizes fighting for goodness is what makes it so good in the first place. I want to be someone who is not only capable of loving in its entirety but capable of loving myself completely as well. As long as I keep that frame of mind on the forefront of my circus called a brain, then I’ll have no trouble finding “home.”
