Beyond Emerald City: Slideshow Sneak Preview

At the end of every Rebel transformation challenge we have a wrap party where everyone celebrates together in true Rebellion fashion. We happen to be having our 13th party commemorating “Rebels Made of Brick: Beyond Emerald City” which EVERYONE IS INVITED TO (message me for details) on Saturday, November 2nd!! ¬†Every Rebel that participated gets their own personal award and before/after certificate. The top inch loser, body composition loser, and fit test performers also get honored. A slideshow depicting the 3 month journey is presented before these all take place…

It is tradition for me to give a sneak peak of that slideshow in the days leading up to the party. This is that sneak peak ūüôā

Rebel Winter Rescue!

If you’re searching for the details on the 14th Rebel challenge starting in mid-November then you can close your Google maps app because you have arrived at your destination. I’m going to give some hard facts below, but first I want to address the focus of this challenge and what differentiates it from a “traditional” Rebel challenge.

The holiday season can be a hectic, stressful, wallet-depleting segment of our lives that can feel like being swept up in a tornado with no sign of stopping until after the 1st of the year. Thus it makes it easy to put yourself on the back burner and give in to the holiday anxiety by doing what we have¬†all¬†done at some points (or are currently doing now) in our lives; we succumb to laziness, throw good eating choices out the window in anticipation of “I’ll start making better decisions when all this craziness dies down,” and use the weather as an excuse to skip everything but holiday parties and marathon shopping. Trust me, I’ve been there. With Rebel Winter Rescue, the mission is to¬†not get caught in that landslide. Subsequently, there will be no weekly weigh-ins or before/after photos and measurements. There WILL be a fit test however so we can have a measure of success for the 2 months we’re going to survive together, only it will be a little bit different than done in the past.

The goal will be to kick some major ass in the health and happiness department Rebel style… That means chants before boot camp, sound offs, spray painted shirts, themed workouts, and some extras that are yet to be announced (like the incorporation of Anytime Health that will work highly in your benefit). Since weekends tend to be spoken for starting on Friday for most people during the holidays, there will be¬†no weekend boot camps¬†for this challenge. All boot camps will be held during the middle of the week in the evening (6pm/7pm) with BOSU getting moved to Saturday morning (so you’ll still have a weekend option along with the work-it circuit class that morning as well). We’re going to make it past Thanksgiving, Christmas time, and the new year together as… wait for it… one team! Because, you know, one dream and all :).

One final twist… Since we’re Rebels and we help others do amazing things while WE do amazing things we’re going to make the holiday season a tad bit brighter for many people the only way we know how; by bonding together. Every¬†other week, we will be doing a different benefit drive starting with food, then toys, followed by clothes, and concluding with living essential items for The Living Room. More details will be given as we go, but for now know that everything raised and donated will be going towards locally organizations/families in need. It will all be raised¬†by the community¬†for the community.

Details

Start date: November 16th. Fit Tests! This will be the only Saturday other than the end where we will meet. End date: January 11th. Fit Tests! Days and Times meeting: This one depends on whether there is more than one team or not. If more than 30 people want to sign up, there will be 2 teams. If less than 30 people want to sign up, there will be one team. If the only way you can sign up is if the 2nd team day options are available, then still fill out the sign-up below and note that in the comments section so I can keep you in the loop :). To make all of this work, I need to stick strictly to the timetable below. If you’re looking to get on the 2nd team, that means recruit, recruit, recruit! CUTOFF IS NOVEMBER 2ND! NO MORE SIGN-UPS PAST THAT DATE!

If 1 team: Every Tuesday at 7pm and every Thursday at 6pm.

If 2 teams: 2nd team will meet every Monday’s at 7pm and every Wednesday at 6pm.

Cost: There are 3 different costs here. One for Anytime Fitness members, one for 1st time Rebel challengers who are NOT currently Anytime Fitness members, and one for returning Rebels who want to do the Rebel challenge but don’t want to sign up for Anytime Fitness. Please understand that the cost difference is to make it equal to those who¬†are Anytime Fitness members and pay monthly dues. It wouldn’t be fair for a club member to pay for gym dues and do the challenge while you pay the same amount they do to do the challenge while paying another gyms dues or simply not paying anything at all. If you are not a member but sign up before or during this challenge, then you will pay the lowest cost.

Anytime Fitness Members: $200

1st time Rebel challenge participant: $275

Returning Rebel challenger but not getting membership: $400

Cost due date: At least half your payment down BY NOVEMBER 16TH and the rest paid BY JANUARY 11TH.I will be strictly enforcing this unless we have a conversation prior with any circumstances that I promise I will be understanding of. I find myself often times getting burned on payments, thus the emphasis this time around. I thank you for your understanding. Like I said though, if circumstances need to be a bit different for you, I’m all ears and would love to work with you!

Colors: Purple and Orange

Schedule: To be released before the start of the challenge

Party: TBD

There will be more info given in the near future, but for now I want to get the sign-ups started! I promise some awesome stuff will be packed into this bad boy, including some surprises I’m aching to announce but for the sake of the special I’m holding it in :). If you’d like to take part, then you know what to do…

Marco Avalos – I’m Not a Changed Person, Just a Better One

IMG_0234

If you look behind the hammer, you can see Marco’s “Most Valuable Hulk” stencil he earned!

When I sat down with Marco, I¬†didn’t hear what I usually hear when I ask somebody to spill their guts in the name of inspiration:

“I really don’t know why you want to interview¬†me, my story isn’t really anything special…”

Something tells me the reason I didn’t hear that was because I approached Marco like this:

“Marco! I want to interview you for the Fitness Rebellion. Before we get started, you better not say anything like ‘I really don’t know why you want to interview me, my story isn’t really anything special…'”

Lucky for us he obliged, and was even excited about it rather than nervous! Go figure…

When you first meet Marco he’s a combination of calculatedly reserved and a ball buster. Never one to shy away from giving someone a friendly ribbing, Marco typically will be the first to greet a new face and even quicker to tell them how much of a blast they’re going to have. When he works out, he turns into an other-wordly beast with a “heart like Art” and the word “quit” scrubbed clean from his vocabulary. A father of two with a beautiful Rebel wife by the name of Lucy, his obsession with cars is worn on his sleeve like a badge of endearment and odds are you can find him at a car show of some sort if not at work, at the gym, or with his family. Need a hand with something? He’ll help you in a heartbeat to a fault (exhaustion can creep up on ya big guy!) especially if you’re a die hard 49er fan like he is.

All of that is simply a mini glimpse into the great man that Marco is. What those tidbits DON’T tell you about is his lifetime struggle with his weight or his severe soda addiction that kept him lethargic and drained around the clock for so long. They don’t pull the curtain back to how privately he’s floated in and out of feeling lost his entire life. It doesn’t tell the story of being surrounded by the wrong friends snowballing strings of bad decisions and choices resulting in misery more often than not. Nor does his light shine on the fact he has hips so bad he needs metal pins to hold them in place or how his habit of running away from the problems in his life and doing¬†anything to keep his mind from facing reality has always led to circumstances getting immeasurably worse in the long run.

When I asked him what turned it all around, he simply said “The Rebel party I went to with Lucy when I met you. That was my turning point.” When I asked him to elaborate, he was quick to explain how he instantly related to the personal stories he was hearing being told from everyone which was quite a big deal since he never really trusted, much less hung out with anybody outside of his own Hispanic race. It was at this 10th Rebel challenge wrap party (every Rebel transformation challenge ends with a big celebration culminating in everyone getting an award, winners being announced, slideshows presented, and much more) where he had the opportunity to connect with a ton of people from all walks of life at a deeper level than he’d ever found himself experiencing. He confessed that it was the moment when I talked about my story in front of everyone and shared what I had been through that it tore down the walls he’d had up for so long and opened his eyes to the fact that we’re all the same people with the same needs, only we just go about them differently.

“You had my respect, which made me actually listen¬†to what you were saying instead of brushing it off.”

So, Marco joined us! His wife, Lucy (the silent assassin) had just completed her first Rebel challenge and everything was good to go for Marco to join in on the second one. From day one, Marco could tell that the magic he experienced at that wrap party was far from a fluke. All of sudden after getting a few workouts in under his belt Marco WANTED to go to the gym! It was fun! He felt great before AND after, which if you’ve ever struggled with enjoying working out (yeah, pretty much all of us) then you know how gigantic of a deal that is. I mean here was something that traditional sucks BIG TIME and shockingly it was amazing for once!

Well, what was the difference? After all, Marco wrestled in high school and worked out with buddies for years afterwards. What had this being different than that?

“I was willing this time.”

The simplicity behind something so powerful floored me.

“I feel more alive now. I opened my eyes to the bigger picture. I get asked all the time by my co-workers ‘you work out bro, how much you bench press?’ and I always say ‘I don’t know, I don’t bench press. I work out.’ They ask me what kind of diet I’m on and I tell them ‘I’m not on a diet, I just make better choices.’ It’s about being there, feeling good, and having fun. You just gotta do it.”

When I asked him about when things start to get difficult and his motivation starts to waiver how he pulls himself back in and gets his “mojo” back, his answer was monumentally straight forward;

“That’s my reality check. I know, just like everybody knows, when I’m not doing what I’m supposed to be doing. If I start slippin’, I just say ‘alright, I had my fun… time to get back at it. In the end I’m not a changed person, I’m just a better one.”

Since having his eyes opened to the fact he alone has the ability to change the parts of his life he doesn’t like if he wants it bad enough and tearing down the walls he’d had up for so long, Marco has done some pretty damn amazing things. He’s gone 14 months (and counting) since his last soda. He’s lost more than 70 lbs putting him¬†under his lightest weight he was when he wrestled in high school. He’s completed 3 Rebel challenges (winning a “Most Valuable Hulk” award along the way) and 1 Tough Mudder (the 11 mile course being the longest distance he has EVER trekked in his¬†life).¬†Hell, he even recently beat my own marathon running and badass Unicorn of a girlfriend in a “plank-off” at the a park workout recently!

When I asked him about his mindset for the future, his approach echoes that of my man Roy Davis;

What’s Next?

Test of Brains

Oh Joy Brain

With the 13th challenge wrapping up, the final test on our Rebellious journey beyond Emerald City is upon us. Having mastered the test of courage and test of heart, it’s time to master your very own brain… and your body in the process.

The test of brains is designed to make you think. You have an EXPERT workshop at your disposal, yet how often do you find yourself going in on your own and using it to the fullest? That workshop I’m talking about is the gym that you have 24 hour access to at any given moment, and using your gym to its full potential means knowing how to use the equipment at your disposal, not just how to attend boot camps and do what your trainers and friends tell you to do. When you know how to use your gym and ALL of its components, the following magic happens:

  • Health Longevity
  • Improved Flexibility
  • Improved Endurance
  • Improved Oxygen Utilization
  • Stronger tendons and joints
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Increased caloric output
  • Sharper brain function
  • Increased energy
  • Increased neuromuscular connectivity

When you don’t know how to use the gym in it’s entirety, you are denying yourself the ability to take care of yourself and learn through experience. That stops now. You are now challenged to become familiar with the aforementioned by not only immersing yourself in the areas you maybe tend to stay away from but by implementation of the very skill set you are tangibly downloading.

From October 5th until October 12th, you have exactly one week to make it into a gym (doesn’t have¬†to be Santa Rosa Ave. Anytime Fitness) on your own and make it through at least ONE of these resistance training workouts below. Each form has a breakdown on how to build your own workout telling you what exercises to do (or research), how to put them together, how many reps to do, and how many sets. Every question is answered in regards to putting it together, now it’s up to you to do it!

I suggest partnering up with somebody if you find yourself being a tad bit intimidated venturing in on your own. Remember though, you’re a Rebel… You’ve got this. Expanding your comfort zone is part of the Rebel code after all! There is no excuse to not do this one that will fly as good enough, so be warned there needs to be some MASSIVELY drastic circumstances for you to not do this. :D.

Click HERE to download your copies of all the forms below (workout tracking sheet included)! Represented are legs, core, chest, arms, shoulders, and back!

Each one of these forms¬†covers proper movement mechanics, contains tips and tricks on keeping everything fresh and correct, and gives an¬†in-depth¬†introspective into the importance each specific area of the body holds. Essentially, using the gym has NOTHING to do with “getting big” and everything to do with improving the functionality of your life. Ladies, if you’re afraid of lifting weights because you’ll get big, that’s like being afraid to drive a car because you’ll turn into a NASCAR speed demon. I’ll be damned if you’re going to wake up one morning and “accidentally” be too muscular, so quit that nonsense and learn your workshop!¬†

I’ve also provided a form to write down and keep track of your workout with a handy key in regards to filling it out. You will receive your purple and final charm on Saturday the 12th when you hand in your form (I have plans to make something motivational out of it so know that¬†that’s why you’re turning it in. You will not be graded beyond “did or did not”).
